A dynamic story about two strangers, one originally from England, the other a transplanted New Yorker now living in Arizona who meet through an on-line personals ad. They're both bright, accomplished, but at different stages of their lives. His name is Kiernan. He's divorced, has four grown children and has returned to graduate school to obtain a doctorate. And so he's living meagerly on student loans and teaching stipends in a trailer in California in order to achieve these goals. Her name is Julie. She's successful, has led an exciting life in New York, where she was a newspaper columnist, magazine writer and author of how-to books for major publishers. Also divorced, (twice to the same man) Julie decides on her own to adopt a child, a little girl named Maya, who is almost 7, from an orphanage in Russia. Maya quickly becomes the light of Julie's life. Eventually, in August of 2001, the two move to Arizona, where Julie continues writing, as well as running her own holistic skin care website, RebornAngel.com. (Many of her how-to books and columns focused on health and beauty.) Maya now grown and a beautiful young woman of 20, gets involved with an older man of 38 who is married and with Julie's disapproval soon moves out. This disappointing turn of events is hurtful, and for the first time, Julie recognizes she's invested all of her time and interest in her daughter and is now suddenly alone. Soon she decides to place an on-line personals ad for companionship. She is seeking a man who shares some of her interests, which includes Broadway musicals, especially by Stephen Sondheim and the Gershwin's. Kiernan, who hasn't begun his school term yet, answers the ad -- and thus begins a magical relationship. They write and share about their past lives and current dreams and goals and soon decide to co-write a murder mystery based on a serial killer. Soon, the emailing is intense and the co-writing project stirs them to phone conversations and text messages, and quickly the desire to meet. He must travel 200 miles from California to visit her in Tucson. Because of some health issues and also his lack of funds, this makes for some difficulties, but still he comes to meet with her...and so the relationship develops even more. What happens after this is fascinating, the kind of book you want to keep on reading to find out what will happen next. And a lot does happen. To Kiernan, to his only son Edward, age 20, and to his and Julie's book project. Finally, a surprising turn of events develops which deeply affects Julie. The emails are real, written by two individuals but in order to protect their identities and privacy, names and locations have been changed.

I loved the book and read it over three days-it was so engrossing. Kiernan Addison is a marvelous character and the description of him as having a Cary Grant voice and great blue eyes painted a portrait of a handsome English man.Julie Jordan was so real, caring about others and wanting to have more in her life as she grew older and found herself alone.
The romantic words spoken and written by the two of them were so real. I also appreciated all the photographs illustrating mostly Julie's life; since I understand that Kiernan's real name and identity precluded any photos of him)

Long Before I Knew You is a page turner. I was absolutely mesmerized reading the emails between these two fascinating people. This story of two older people who find each other through an on-line add and then honestly share their innermost feelings and disclose so much about themselves was absolutely marvelous. Great reading; beautifully written. Waiting for the next Judi McMahon book, have just re-read her first
Judi McMahon has created a refreshing way to tell a love story through letters, in this case through emails. Two attractive middle-aged people meet online and begin to share their own stories as they are creating their own. They even decide to co-write a murder mystery.Though he's in California and she's in Arizona, they eventually do meet, and what happens is dramatic and heart-rending.

Just finished reading LONG BEFORE I KNEW YOU. The photos throughout are fascinating too! In fact, stayed up all night to finish this lovely story about two people who meet through the e-mails and develop a deep friendship and for at least one of them, romance. But Isn't that the way too often.... when two people are at different stages of their lives? Timing is everything. But what a wonderful telling about the inner hopes and wants of both people. Wonderful!!!!

A unique story about two unique people. Kiernan Addison was troubled, but obviously a genius. Julie Jordan never lost her joy and sense of wonder about life. When the two meet through a personals ad, everything from a serial murder mystery, to sharing their secret hopes and dreams takes form on the pages of this beautiful book, most in e-mails, journal notes, later meetings and the author says it's based on two real people and their correspondence. Interesting book about two lonely people meeting online and while for him it has to be friendship she begins to want more. The age difference is in the way, but even more, he has no money and is living in a trailer and back at school in his 50's and can't get "involved." They're both unique individuals so what they write and share back and forth makes for a good read. - Mike Moreno
Wow! This is such a great read! Well written, nicely developed characters, exciting and thought provoking. I had to buy a second copy to share with my teen daughters. This story will delight you and really the writing is very good. I think it would make a great movie! Definitely recommend for a fun and thrilling read.
This book is charming and a joy to read. How two people from different worlds can meet on line and then how their friendship grows so quickly is delicious reading. I enjoyed Long Before I Knew You very much, and incidentally the photographs inside make it even more interesting. Judi McMahon is a page-turning writer!
