INDECENT PROPOSAL

Years ago Ann Talbot had been forced to leave Heath Bodine without a goodbye. Now she was back, and though Heath still had the power to make her insides quiver with longing, he had changed. Yes, he was proposing marriage. But not out of love—out of revenge. And Ann knew she had no choice but to say yes.

Heath intended to make Ann pay for running out on him. But no matter how much he tried to deny it, living under the same roof and sharing the same bed with her was going to prove his undoing. Because he didn't just want her body, he wanted her heart as well...

In a blurb at the end of the book, the author writes she's seldom been disappointed in a romance book. I can't say the same. Actually, I'm more often disappointed than not. This is the first of Ms Malek's novels I've read and I'll admit upfront I would consider reading another. I liked this one.

Many have complained that the plot premise -- the millionaire willing to spend his $$ to save the damsel in distress in order to extract revenge -- was too improbable. I didn't find that a problem because it seemed apparent early on that that was not his only motivation; he also still loved and wanted her. Many others have outlined the rest of the story so I won't reiterate.

What I liked: The writing kept me reading. That should be a given, but in this age of self publishing I have stopped being surprised at the amount of poor writing, grammar and editing issues, over the top situations and angst upon angst. There were a few typos (Greenwich Milage) but not that many. For the most part, the characters acted the way I expected real people like those characters would have. It felt realistic.

So what kept me from rating higher? I like to read. When I am reading something I am enjoying, I am not in a hurry for it to be over. This novel would have been excellent if it was just developed more. What some reviewers have complained about Heath's character and behavior as unrealistic I understand from a personal and professional experience as actual behavior of children of alcoholics, as well as other dysfunctional parenting. I'm not sure if I would have "got it" it it weren't for forty years of nursing and a personal interest in the subject. The author took the time to give us the prior history of Anne and Heath's personal involvement, but dropped the ball when it came to their backgrounds growing up, especially Health's, other than a brief mention of what his parents were like, why he was the way he was. After putting up with his abuse the way she did initially, for Ann to then to deliver an ultimatum very suddenly and stick to it didn't seem realistic. More than likely, she'd have given him a few more chances than she did before finally calling it quits. After all, she was a victim of bad parenting too; the author made her seem a little too put-together in this instance for a woman whose obvious inability to deal with stress had her anorexic! I guess I found the novel rushed, from the time they admitted to love to the end. I felt I had to fill in the blanks for myself.

Perhaps my expectations are unrealistic. If I was rating this in comparison to the other novels of this genre I've read, I would probably have rated it a four star. It's not one I'll probably go back and read again, as there isn't that "something" that draws a person back. But if you're looking for a quick, enjoyable read and nothing too memorable, give it a try. It far surpasses most of the outrageous billionaire romances. I do think this author has the ability to do better and I may find something else of hers to try.

Marriage In Name Only eBook Doreen Owens Malek Reviews

Even though Marriage in Name Only is an older novel and feels a little dated, it has a good story. The hero is a bit domineering but there is still a romantic chemistry between the leads.

Ann Talbott is a writer and she has reluctantly returned to her Florida hometown to straighten out her brother's financial mess of the company (he has a gambling habit allegedly financed from company money) and to find a way to post bail for her brother too. She discovers the company is in ruins.

Enter Heath Bodine, Ann's teen aged love. Heath is the boy from the wrong side of the tracks who is now a multi-millionaire. He will save the company and post bail for Ann's brother if Ann agrees to marry him.

Ann balks at this as she can see how very angry Heath is with her. She realizes Heath wants revenge because she left him eleven years earlier, but she really has no other alternatives and she agrees to the marriage.

These leads have deeply held emotions and they have a ton of hurt. Heath, especially has trust issues due to his childhood, his father was an alcoholic. Heath lashes out verbally as a defense mechanism and Ann remains stoic. Yet, revelations from the past help heal some but not all of this couple's wounds. Ann is an honorable person and she realizes what does and does not work in her marriage so she is not afraid to change tactics. Heath is emotional and expressive and afraid to be vulnerable because doing so in the past has exposed him to hurtful situations that have crushed his feelings. He can be stubborn but he was in no way boring or even predictable. This couple's romance is an interesting one that goes beyond revenge, I am giving this novel four stars.
I enjoyed reading this story. Book had grammar errors, but they didn't distract from the story too much. Story is about Heath who was the kid from the wrong side of the tracks and Ann who was the rich girl on the island. They met 11 years ago when Heath was working on her father's boat. The attraction was instant. They fell madly in love even though she was only 17 and he was 19. They continued to see each other in secret and had planned to leave to Georgia, get married and live together. On the night they planned to run away, her father catches her and threatens to have Heath thrown in jail for statutory rape. She wanted to protect Heath so she agrees and moves away without a word. Heath waited and waited and she never came. Without a word, he joins the Navy the next day.

11 years later, Ann comes back to deal with her father's crumbling company and to help her brother Tim out of jail. Ann has never been back, she hasn't had a relationship with her father, even when he died. She had to come and deal with the financial mess her family found themselves in, on the verge of bankruptcy. Heath was back in town, he had become the richest man in the island from a patent he sold. He was so angry with Ann and her family all he wanted to do was punish her for the pain he caused her. He was bitter, carried a ton of baggage and had lots of insecurities despite having all the money in the world. He offers to help Ann in exchange of a marriage. She was to play the dutiful wife, sleep with him but she would never get to him.

Their drama begins and tons of things happen between them. He treated her with indifference all the time, except when they were together in bed. I know that Heath's motivation for his actions was revenge, but sometimes in my opinion was too much, he was completely blinded and stubborn. I wanted to hit him upside the head. Overall, enjoyable read!
